Under the tree of Quaid-i-Azam
University Islamabad (Pakistan) a fruitful library of the NIHCR is
a premier library in respect of its precious holdings and a
comprehensive collection of materials in a specific field,
academic discipline of research including primary and secondary
sources, selected to meet the information needs of Institute’s
Research Fellows and serious researchers. The NIHCR library was
established in 1974 along with the Institute a unique research
library of distance learning of Historical and Cultural Research.
Its functions are acquiring rare print and non-print records then
arrange in a systematic way to facilitate the users at National
and International level. This library also provide Reference
Service to the Researchers, Scholars, Teachers and Students. It possesses invaluable printed
documents of many languages in different scripts expressly,
English, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Sindhi which provide immense
knowledge on the history. The books are shelves according to the
Dewey decimal classification from 000 – 900 the areas of subjects
are:
Library Science, Philosophy, Psychology, all religions Christians,
Jews, Hindu, Sikhs and specially on Universal religion of Islam,
Social Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Political
Science, Politics of the world, Political Parties to order All
India Muslim League, Congress, International Relations, Foreign
Policy, Terrorism, Election, Education, Constitutional History of
Pakistan and all around the world, various Languages History,
Environments, Muslims Art and Architectures, Indian Art and
Architecture, the literature, world history books covering
civilization from Mesopotamian to Indus includes Harrapa and
Mohenjodero, Biographies Books covering all the worlds famous
personalities, Cambridge History of India, South Asia, 2000
volumes of Indian History books covering Muslim empires, Mughal
periods, British Raj, 2500 volumes books of Pakistan History and
freedom movements, Punjab past and present history, Sindh, Balouchistan and North West Frienter History, Bangladesh History,
Afghanistan History, Central Asia, Iran, Iraq, Europe and America.
The NIHCR Library
resources are kept in open access shelves to its all readers
allowing every one to browse freely these resources. It
contains over 50’000 volumes and also subscribed more than 60
periodicals/journals in various subjects. Also
subscribes a number of newspapers. Back issues of
periodicals are bound and preserved for future reference. It
has four special corners one is only well-known personality
Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah founder of Pakistan this
corner provides all information about his life struggle and
achievements. 2nd corner collection provides the knowledge
about renowned personality Allama Muhammad Iqbal was a great
literary figure and a social thinker of South Asia 3rd corner
collection comprise of books mainly on Kashmir History,
Culture, Civilization and traditions of the Kashmiri peoples.
4th corner reserved for NIHCR Publications.
Reference area of the NIHCR Library is just like a backbone of
the library. This area consisting of fast finding tools such as
almanacs, atlases, bibliographies, biographical sources,
catalogues, concordances, dictionaries, directories,
encyclopedias, glossaries, handbooks, indices, Indian
yearbooks, Pakistan yearbooks, gazetteers and other
information sources are available in the library but these
reference books are not issued as a general policy and they
need to be consulted in the library.
A large number of scholars, noted litterateurs and dignitaries
visit the library frequently. Reputed personalities in the field
of history and literature happened to visit and observe its
collections in the 21st century. They have penned down their
observations in the visitor’s book of the library and rated it
as the unique collection richer than those of such other
libraries of the Pakistan in the field of History.
